About Marya
Marya Stark is a discoverer of archetypes, storyteller, bard, and muse. She is a multi-media enchantress, and a carrier of myth, mystery, and medicine songs with which she embarks to create a ceremony of the human experience, taking her audience on lucid journeys through the caverns of the Soul. In addition to her solo work, Marya is also a member of the all female band Starling Arrow, along with Rising Appalachia, Tina Malia, and Ayle Nereo.
About the Film
This film is a celebration of the waters of the world, a movement honoring the sacredness of grief, the spirits of the elemental guardians, the weaving of the rivers, inter-generational restoration of the water gates, and the cleansing of the Soul from the depth of the waters within. It is formed around Marya's forthcoming album Underground River (a collaboration with Daniel Berkman) and is a wordless story of the journey of the waters.
The Music
‘Underground River’ is a concept album composed by Marya Stark and Daniel Berkman inspired by lucid dreams and ancestral spirits of the water. The album features non-linguistic vocal choral arrangements, kora, ondomo, cello, minimal sound design, and sonically explores aspects of the global water cycle. ‘Underground River’ is a representation of the subterranean emotional body of the individual, the collective emotional body of humanity, and our relationship to the worlds of water..
This impressionistic soundscape conveys a conversation between water spirits. It is being released alongside a greater body of multi-media artwork, including an original commissioned watercolor and acrylic painting, film photography, and 12 minute film piece featuring a multicultural cast of 18 women in various choreographies demonstrating the ancestral feminine relationship to the waters of life.
This dance film uses clips from 4 different songs to seamlessly weave a river of modern dance. It conveys women converging to honor the elders, build bridges between generations, walking together as a symbol of the rivers of the lands returning to the sea. The dancers embody different vignettes of animate water spirits, forming cymatic geometries with the sound and movement. It is an origin story for aquatic life, and harkens to the great Greek myths of the nymphs, the naiads and the oceanids. It also has roots in african folklore and the water spirits called the Kuntumble.
There is one single that has been released 'Water Into Water.'
A second single 'Alluvium' is being mastered for release in early april ahead of a live Film Preview and release showcase in Asheville, N.C. with the filmmakers, live performance, choreography, and an immersive community art installation. There will also be a second film previewing in the Uk in early may prior to the release of the full album the third week of may. The full 12 minute film will be released online in tandem with the release of the album, including many segments curated for social media.
